The Story of Emily's Handmade Soaps' Brick & Mortar Grand Opening!

The first thing I need to say is that I'm SO grateful.

Grateful to the family that came in to help me get the shop together.
Grateful to the friends who were so full of support and kind words that I may have shed a tear or two.
Grateful for the amazing, encouraging culture of Des Moines as a whole.
Grateful for the surrounding business owners who, out of the goodness of their heart, walked into my shop to welcome me and offer to share flyers for the big grand opening day.
Grateful for so many of the soap lovers of weeks, months, and years past, who visited to start their holiday shopping.

I'm so grateful.

None of this would be happening if it were not for my incredibly loyal customers and for all the people who have believed in Emily's Handmade Soaps.

I know many of my friends near and far did not have a chance to attend the store opening, so I put together this post for you!

We opened our doors for business officially at 11am.

By 11:01, we had people walking in to sniff out their next sweet-smelling purchase.

The first customer of the day was our neighbor, the owner of Spyro’s Gyros right on Marine View. It was great to hear from him as he had owned the Greek and American restaurant for the last 5 years of its multi-decade life. I enjoyed meeting him and getingt to know another business owner just across the street.

We had a few (okay, maybe many) delicious cookies from the amazing Dana K’s. Just look at them! They were as big as a face and insanely yummy! Thank you for being part of our day, Dana K’s Kafe!

And I am so excited about this: Now that I’m in my own store front, I have the ability to work with other vendors!

We have delectable, make-your-eyes-roll-back-yummy chocolates from Theo. It’s organic, fair trade and 100% the best chocolate out there. Theo is based here in Seattle so I’m really happy to welcome them into my store.

Big Dipper Wax Works brought in their beautiful dipped candle collection along with some smaller candles that really pack a scented punch. I can’t get over the rainbow of beautifully crafted candles. I love that they are based in Seattle as well.

We also have some delicious tea from B. Fuller’s Mortar and Pestle! We are featuring several delicious tea blends that are almost too pretty to steep. This company’s packaging is stunning. Look at these glass tea vials!

And of course, we can’t forget all of the products made by yours truly!

First, we have the handmade soaps themselves.

We had a special Soap of the Month: Pumpkin Pie Scented soap! It's a rustic soap that is only available for a limited time! It's different from most of my soaps because it's processed "hot" while I typically cold process my soaps. They smell exactly like Pumpkin Pie, but don't take my word for it. Come and sniff them for yourself.

Then, we have the Sugar Scrubs, Hand and Body Lotion, and my herbaceous Bath Tea.

Emily's Handmade Soaps' storefront is located at:

709 S 219th St
Des Moines, WA 98198

(On 219th between Marine View and 7th Ave just across the road from Spyro's Gyros)

Hours of Operation are: Tuesday - Saturday 11 am - 6am

I look forward to seeing you in the store soon!

PS: We officially have gift cards! They can be used to purchase any product in the store. It's a great way to buy handmade without having to guess someone's favorite scent.

More on Natural Colorants

Now that farmers market season is wrapping up and my holiday show schedule is taking form, I've had a little time to catch my breath and reflect on the past few months. If you've visited my website recently, you may have noticed a shift in favor of more essential oil soaps than those using fragrance

Making Soap Runs in the Family!

Our popular Pumpkin Soap will be back beginning next month!

Soap making runs in the family! I was recently discussing my soapmaking business with my mom, and she had some fond memories to share about her own grandmother (my great-grandmother) making laundry soap when she was a youngster. The tale goes something like this:

Adventures at the Farmers Market

The kids are out of school, the sun is (mostly) shining here in the Pacific Northwest, and farmers market season is in full swing. In the past couple of weeks, I've had the pleasure of vending at the Kent Farmers Market, Burien Farmers Market, and my favorite (I'm biased because I live here!), the Des Moines Waterfront Farmers Market. Needless to say, it's been a very busy time of hauling soap to and from locations, and of course, making more soap! Here are some notable highlights from the past few weeks of farmers markets.

Bartering for Berries in Burien

I had the opportunity to trade my soaps for a flat of local, organic berries from another vendor at the Burien Farmers Market recently. It doesn't get much better than this! I've also bartered my soaps for bakery bread, signs, and jewelry in the past.

Fresh, local, organic berries. It doesn't get any better than this!

First Day of Summer Scents

Today is the first day of summer, and I have some classic, limited edition summer soaps coming your way!

Summer is Coming!

Sandalwood Soap

Sandalwood is just one of those classic scents that bring to mind walks on the beach and hanging out around the campfire with friends on those warm summer evenings. I added

New, Notable, and Naturally Nourishing

With farmers market season right around the corner, I've been working on stocking up on some new (and returning) artisan bath and body products for you! Here are some new, notable, and nature-inspired goodies that you'll want to check out.

Tea-Inspired Soaps

As you know, dear readers, I like to use alternate liquids in my soaps from time to time. I recently had a special order for a tea-themed bridal shower, so I took the proverbial ball and ran with it! The result was two tea-themed soaps that are made with real green tea. Jasmine Green Tea soap is earthy and fruity with real green tea sprinkled on top. White Tea & Ginger soap has a floral and citrus scent that is as delicate as the white and gold swirls within the soap. I topped it with organic ginger tea for some visual interest.

Jasmine Green Tea soap is one of two tea-themed soaps that are new this month!
